RE: [MarksJamberoo] Culwulla Chambers

In addition Mary

There were Culwulla (often spelt Culwalla) farms in the William MARKS
family, one I know of was in the Tweed Area and the other in Bega.

The first time I have seen the name used was in the McCaffrey Papers
in reference to a location near Jamberoo, referring to a clearing
where the still was.

I was asked to find out the meaning of the name last year as someone
had written to Gary Marks of Avona, Jamberoo, saying they wanted to
know the meaning as they wanted to name their new place Cullwalla but
wanted to be PC and not use it if it was going to be disrespectful.

Unfortunately neither the local lands council, the uni of wollongong,
the local family history centre at Kiama nor ATSIC could help. I have
also looked up a number of Aboriginal dictionaries, no help there
either.

There is one unsourced reference in notes from an earlier researcher,
Jean Chambers, that it means fig tree. Would love to know where she
got that info from... Sylvia have you contacted Jean yet? She is
still in the electoral rolls...
