Arnold was unmarried and still living at home with the family in Mills Road, Mornington, Dunedin, and was working as a clerk for the NZ Loan and Mercantile Company when war broke out.

He joined the 4th (Otago) Regiment of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force on 14th February 1915 and following training in Egypt, was sent to Gallipoli.
He was wounded in action there (gunshot wound to upper right thigh/groin) and was evacuated to Egypt on the hospital ship "Delta" to No. 2 Cairo General Hospital, and died there of his wound on 17 August 1915.

His service record lists what looks like a promotion of some sort only a few months after joining, but the new rank given is illegible (corporal seems pretty unlikely so soon). Perhaps an increase from Private 2nd class to 1st class?
