Cemetary records made at the time record 03 JAN 1890, and this is assumed most likely to be correct.
As Registrar at the time, it is very likey father Joshua King's own record with Births Deaths & Marriages would clarify.

Email from June Wallace, Library Plus Officer, Manaia, South Taranaki District Council (27/09/06): "I have checked our burial register and the only information that we hold is what is showing on our Cemetery records. The burial register book showsthat Wilfred King died at Manaia on the 3rd January 1890, no burial date, no age at time of death. The burial was paid for by Joshua King on the 3rd January 1890.

The information has been taken from both the headstone at the cemetery and the written record from the burial register.

Sorry I can not give you any further information but it may be possible for you to obtain further information from Death, Birth and marriage records."

Paul King (27/09/06) comment: Ironically, Joshua would have been the local Registrar at the time, so would have had to record his own son's death.

Joshua must also have needed a great level of self control to have arranged and paid for his own sons burial on the very day he died - perhaps just better to get it over with?

Will meanwhile assume the Cemetary register record, having been taken at the time, is more likely to be accurate than Clara Janes record written after the fact (likely at between 13 to 15 yeas later, judging by handwritten entries).

Birth Deaths & Marriages records should be consulted to verify
